Blackmores Folic Acid may reduce the risk of a woman having a child with birth defects of the brain and/or spinal cord, if taken daily for one month before conception and during pregnancy.

Blackmores Folic Acid contains folic acid which if taken daily for one month before conception and during pregnancy, may reduce the risk of a woman having a child with birth defects of the brain and/or spinal cord such as the neural tube defects known as spina bifida and anencephaly.

   Foetal formation increases the mother's need for folic acid and deficiency is common during pregnancy.

Supplementation of folic acid is recommended for at least one month prior to conception and for the duration of the pregnancy, and may reduce the incidence of neural tube defects in the unborn child.

Deficiency of folic acid is common in the general population, resulting from prolonged stress, chronic alcoholism, viral infection and liver disease. When folic acid is lacking, red blood cells become enlarged and oxygen carrying capacity is reduced, resulting in symptoms of breathlessness, headache, pallor, muscle fatigue and exhaustion. Additionally, deficiency of folic acid (along with vitamin B6), is associated with elevated plasma levels of homocysteine.
