Cellular energy metabolism produces waste products called peroxides. They are significant in the athletic horse because of the huge amounts of energy used by their musculo-skeletal system. Unless the peroxides can be neutralised effectively, muscle damage will occur. One of the most important anti-oxidants in the body, is the selenium containing enzyme, Glutathione Peroxidase. If selenium is lacking in the diet, this enzyme cannot do its job effectively. New Zealand soils are generally low in selenium with over 40% of farmland considered to be deficient. Dietary supplementation is the only way to ensure horses receive their daily requirement.
Selenium is available in either inorganic or chelated forms. The inorganic form, although inexpensive, is poorly absorbed. The chelated form is more efficiently absorbed therefore is better utilised by the horse.
EQUINE SELENIUM K contains chelated Selenium EDTA. Horses should receive a 15gram dose per day which delivers 1.66mg of available selenium. As well as this, the kelp meal base provides over 30 important micro-nutrients such as boron and molybdenum.
