Vitamin B is a popular group of nutrients which are well known for supporting the nervous system, energy levels, and general wellbeing.

Once thought to be a single vitamin, the B-vitamin group contains thiamine (Vitamin B 1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), biotin (B7), folic acid (B9) and various cobalamins (B12 group).

Vitamin B supplements can be purchased individually, or in compounds containing all eight B vitamins called vitamin B complex. There are specific properties in each of the B vitamins, and many supplements and multivitamins contain B vitamins. It is helpful to talk to your health practitioner to ensure you are getting the right ones, as there are many different compounds and formulas available.

  • In particular, Vitamin B2 is reputed to deter insects due to the odour it emits on the skin. Vitamin B complex is sometimes taken by people studying for exams to support concentration.
  • B vitamins are essential in pregnancy, and support energy levels and general wellbeing. Folic acid is highly recommended during pregnancy to reduce the risk of birth defects.
  • Most B vitamins are found in the same foods, which include meat, fish and dairy products, whole grains, brewers yeast, bananas, molasses and chili. Liver, turkey and tuna are particularly good sources.
  • Did you know more than 25 nutrients were previously thought to be B vitamins, which explains the gaps in the B vitamin group number system.
