For the treatment of constipation.

Movicol-half sachets contain macrogol (polyethylene glycol '3350'), which is a type of medicine known as an osmotic laxative. Each sachet also contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride. The contents of the sachets are mixed with water to make a drink.

Macrogol is an inert substance that passes through the gut without being absorbed into the body. It relieves constipation because it causes the water it is taken with to be retained in the bowel instead of being absorbed into the body. This increases the water content and volume of the stools in the bowel, making them softer and easier to pass.

The sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride and potassium chloride (electrolytes) are included in this medicine to help ensure that the laxative works without causing the body to gain or lose significant amounts of sodium, potassium or water.

Used for -

Chronic constipation
A build up of compressed and hardened stools in the rectum as a result of chronic constipation (faecal impaction as diagnosed by a Doctor).

Each 6.9g sachet contains: Macrogol 3350 6.563g, Sodium chloride 175.4mg, Sodium bicarbonate 89.3mg, Potassium chloride 23.3mg.

On reconstitution in 62.5ml of water each sachet provides: Sodium 65mmoL/L, Chloride 53mmoL/L, Bicarbonate 17mmoL/L, Potassium 5.4mmoL/L. Also contains potassium acesulfame.

Dosage

Constipation: Adults - See patient information leaflet.
Chronic constipation: Adults and children aged 2 years and older - See patient information leaflet.
Faecal Impaction as diagnosed by a Doctor/Prevention of recurrence of faecal impaction in children aged 2 years and older: See patient information leaflet.

Directions for use: Dissolve the contents of one sachet in ¼ cup (about 60ml) of water then drink it.

Not recommended for use in children under 2 years of age.

Warnings

Do not exceed the stated dose. Drink plenty of water, and increase fibre in diet, except in cases of medication-induced constipation. Prolonged use of laxatives is undesirable and may lead to dependence. MOVICOL-Half should not be used for the treatment of faecal impaction in children for more than 7 days. If symptoms persist, see your doctor.
