An iron binding protein that supports iron levels, immune support and antioxidant activities.
An iron binding protein that plays several important biological roles related to its iron-binding ability, immune support and antioxidant activities.
Lactoferrin is a powerful, naturally occurring iron binding protein. The highest known concentrations of lactoferrin are found in human colostrum, with significant levels also found naturally in bovine colostrum, the secretions of human tear ducts, salivary and prostate glands and certain immune system white blood cells.
Lactoferrin plays several important biological roles related to its iron-binding ability, immune support and antioxidant activities. Research has shown oral supplementation with lactoferrin to be helpful in supporting immune function against bacterial, viral, fungal and protozoal infections, as these organisms depend on an adequate supply of free iron for reproduction and survival.
Oxidative free radicals released during the inflammatory process can cause additional tissue stress. By binding free iron that may exacerbate further oxidative stress, lactoferrin also supports healthy tissue maintenance.
Ongoing research supports Naturopathic Doctor Michael Murray’s statement that “lactoferrin is definitely indicated [for nutritional support of healthy iron levels] in people with elevated iron levels such as haemochromatosis” and also those with low bone density.
Use: For nutritional support of immune system function (especially during infection), the body’s ability to maintain healthy iron levels and moderate free radical activity.
